Description 55-plus comfort sailing trip

Each Wadden Sea island has its own charm and attractions. They all share the most beautiful beaches of the Netherlands. Beaches which are a part of the Wadden Sea, a unique nature reserve which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage for a few years now. If you visit the islands regularly you have seen them undoubtedly: historical ships sailing from one island to the other. Maybe you even saw our beautiful Groningen high seas’ tjalk “Spes Mea” and our guests waving cheerfully. And maybe you thought: “Oh, I really want to go on such a trip someday”. And that is possible, we planned four 55+ comfort trips for you this year.

For these comfort trips the Spes Mea takes on only 14 persons per trip to ensure the ship offers extra space (normally we sail with 20 guests). You have comfortable cabins for 2 with great beds. Each cabin has a washbasin with hot and cold water. The Spes Mea offers two spacious showers and toilets and a very comfortable salon.

When the food is great, the atmosphere is as well, therefore we bring along a chef for the trip. The chef will pamper you with his excellent cuisine. The meals on board are included as well as the snacks in between, the so-called deck snacks.

The guests, together with the skipper, decide on the destination but whether it is feasible depends on the wind and the tides. Often we pay a visit to the Wadden Sea islands and it is possible to go on a bike tour on one of the islands. Your skipper can arrange that for you. Would you like to help with setting and lowering the sails? Take over the steering wheel for a while? There are lots of possibilities. You will enjoy your week’s holiday on the ship and the Wadden Sea.

The suggested route is only a possibility. The Spes Mea is a sailboat and depends on the wind and the tides. The crew of the Spes Mea will do everything in their power to give you unforgettable holidays. You will enjoy the sailing, the tranquillity of the water, the wind and the sun on your skin and have a great time-out!

This is what a week might! look like from day to day:

  • Sunday night: the crew of the Spes Mea will await you on board in the Harlingen harbour at 8:00 pm.
  • Monday morning: we sail to the island of Texel, a trip of about 5 to 6 hours. The skipper and the sailor instruct you about sailing and together we sail the mighty Tjalk on the Wadden Sea. On the island of Texel we sail into the harbour of Oudeschild. There you can, for example, rent a bike and ride it to Den Burg to do some sightseeing.
  • Tuesday: we sail on to the island of Vlieland. We arrive at this small but beautiful island at about 2:30 or 3:00 pm. Fancy a walk on the beach or a bike tour through the dunes and forests to the village of Oost-Vlieland?
  • Wednesday: we sail to the island of Terschelling which is the most well-known and popular island. We sail into the harbour of West-Terschelling. The island has a lot to offer: you can visit the Beachcombers’ Museum or the Museum of Natural History, go on a bike tour, take a stroll or just enjoy a beverage on the terrace of one of the many cafes and beach bars.
  • Thursday morning: due to the tides we leave early and set sail to Ameland. We sail alongside sandbanks and maybe we are able to watch seals. On the island of Ameland you can enjoy a wonderful bike tour, a walk through the still unspoilt nature reserve or go for a swim in the ocean.
  • On Friday we return to Harlingen where we will arrive before 4:00 pm. Enjoying our last day aboard the great Tjalk Spes Mea we let the chef pamper us with culinary dishes. You will disembark at 4:00 pm at the latest.

In 2011 we visited the island of Schiermonnikoog as well. During our journey to the island the Spes Mea dried up and we arrived at the island at night. After a day on Schiermonnikoog we left the island and sailed towards Ameland where we dropped anchor in a strait called Holwerderbalg. The next morning after enjoying a beautiful sunrise and a visit from about 200 seals we sailed on to Ameland and then via Terschelling back to Harlingen. The route may be different each time.
