Bree Sant
In 1905, this beautiful two-masted clipper was launched at shipyard Kalkman in Capelle aan den IJssel (Klaringse Veer), near Rotterdam. She was launched under the name ‘Cathalina’ and the first skipper and owner was L. Kanters. The clipper was solidly built because the sometimes rough Westerschelde had to be navigable. The ship sailed with cargo until 1929. In that year, the sailing gear was removed and an engine was installed. The Cathalina served as a freighter until the end of the 1970s. Then she ended up as a houseboat in front of the shore until Jan Brouwer bought the ship in 1994. The Cathalina was given a new name: Bree Sant. In 1995, she was converted into a sailing passenger ship. From 1995, Jan sailed the IJsselmeer and the Wadden Sea with satisfied passengers. At the end of 2023, Klaas Bosch took over the ship and Jan was able to enjoy his well-earned retirement.

Bree Sant then
The clipper Bree Sant was built in 1905 at shipyard Kalkman in Kralingse Veer under the smoke of Rotterdam under the name ‘ Cathalina “, later the ship was called ”Adriana’ and today ‘Bree Sant’. This is also the name of an ancient sandbank in the Zuiderzee and Waddenzee on which the Afsluitdijk is now built.
The clipper Bree Sant was built in1905 at the Kalkman shipyard in Kralingse Veer under the name ‘ Cathalina ’, commissioned by skipper L. Kanters from Terneuzen. It became a sturdy clipper suitable for the rough Westerschelde. In 1922, the ship was bought by R.A. Ruijtenberg, who sailed it until 1929. In 1929, the clipper was converted into a motor vessel at the Stam firm in Nieuw Lekkerland. A new skipper’s quarters and a wheelhouse were added. The ship sailed sand and gravel until 1936, and until 1940 it sailed a lot of general cargo on the Rhine. After World War II, it mainly sailed to Belgium. In 1956, electric light came on board. From 1958, the ship often sailed the Rhine again to Cologne and Dusseldorf. In 1968, a new engine was put in, a 153 hp Scania Vabis. It now has a brand new 185 hp engine, which has better emission values than the old one. The ship sailed cargo until the late 1970s, when it became a houseboat. Jan and Trudy bought the ship in 1994 and completely rebuilt it in 1995 and put it back under sail. At the end of 2023, Klaas Bosch took over the ship.
Bree Sant now
After a first season of sailing, the Bree Sant proved to be an excellent sailor with also spacious and luxurious accommodation
The Bree Sant is a two-masted clipper over 32 metres long and 6 metres wide. A sail area of 400 square metres, with all the additional sails up to 700 square metres. The sails are easy to operate, so that even a small number of people can sail. On deck, there is plenty of space and a large, cosy cockpit so everyone can find a spot. The wooden masts and spars and lots of teak on deck give the ship a special appearance.
Downstairs, you enter a nicely furnished lounge and spacious open kitchen separated by a bar.
The mahogany panelling has a nautical atmosphere and you will feel like you are on board a classic yacht. This is also where you will find the cabins, sanitary facilities and storage spaces. The entire ship is equipped with central heating for colder periods. The cabins are equipped with hot and cold running water, 220-volt sockets, clothes hooks and a locker. The outside
The Bree Sant is one of the most beautiful clippers in the fleet of traditional ships with a classic, authentic silhouette. In addition, it is a comfortable fast sailor. Skipper Jan Brouwer grew up on and alongside the water, has years of experience with large sailing ships and is always up for a challenge. Jan built the entire ship himself and knows better than anyone how to get the best out of his ship. He likes to sail to the Wadden Islands, the historic towns along the IJsselmeer, the Frisian lakes or a tour of North Holland, but he is also open to your own ideas! You have the option of actively participating in the sailing, but if it suits you, you can also enjoy what is going on around you in peace and quiet. With Enkhuizen as your base, the entire IJsselmeer and Wadden Sea are open to you!
Moving around on board the Bree Sant is easy and there is a spacious seating area, a sun deck and a large aft deck where you are always welcome. The teak gives the ship a special look.
